Best Practices For Cleaning Houses

One of the overarching philosophies for house cleaning businesses should be – don’t make it weird. When you interview people, wheel of fortune style, about what they encountered with cleaning services that they didn’t like, many of them talk about an unsettled feeling when dealing with a particular company.

So what are those pain points that people deal with when they’re working with cleaning companies? Here are three things that companies should do or not do in order to provide better service.

Your Home and Your Stuff

One of the biggest concerns people have is cleaning companies coming in where cleaners are poking through their personal items and making comments.

You didn’t hire somebody as a life coach, or to give you advice on how to keep your things. You hired a professional cleaning service to clean a home in a way that’s effective and efficient. Forays into personal business are strictly discouraged, because they simply make people uncomfortable in many situations.

When in doubt, we apply the golden rule – do unto others as you would have them do to you. But we’ve heard from people that some cleaning companies just have this snarky attitude that turned them off, and in some cases, kept them from enjoying a clean home for years.

Lack of Good Scheduling

Here’s another tale of creepy cleaning services.

It’s a situation where you just don’t know when they’re going to show up.

Maybe you are sitting there at home in the evening, and out of the blue, here comes the van. People get out and rush into your home and start scouring surfaces and sweeping up frantically, but you’re in the middle of something, and it’s really inconvenient!

One of the best ways to sketch people out about cleaning is to show up unannounced. Instead, the best practice is to keep to your schedule and show up when you say you’re going to, and that makes people feel valued and safe.

Good Cop, Bad Cop

Here’s another weird situation with cleaners that we heard about from a couple of our customers who were very put off by cleaners.

It goes kind of like this – you talk to somebody on the phone who is really jovial and nice, and they come to your house, and you have a great relationship. But then they bring a helper who’s walking around scowling and throwing things around making a lot of noise. The helper won’t make eye contact or introduce themselves, and you just feel awkward and sort of embarrassed, or in some cases intimidated.

Again, this is just a basic problem with courtesy and professionalism.
